SHOULD WE DO A FIRST LOOK?

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “should we do a first look?” So today I thought I would sit down and share a few reasons why I personally encourage first looks as someone who got married themselves and has been photographing weddings since they were 13! First looks aren’t for everyone, but if you like these positives below to having a first look then a first look may be perfect for you and your person!!

1. IT HELPS CALM THE NERVES.

The most important reason why I tell couples to have a first look is that it will calm the nerves and take the pressure off. Getting married myself helped me to feel with my brides and understand how I can better and encourage and love them!! One of those ways is by encouraging them to do a first look! On my wedding day, I felt so emotional and anxious throughout the morning. All the fears and nerves were running through my mind and I just couldn’t wait to see John. The moment John and I saw each other during the first look, all my little butterflies left. We were able to just be together and process the day, emotions, joys and fears.

2. IT HELPS YOUR WEDDING DAY RUN SMOOTHLY.

If you do a first look, you and your photographer will be able to take your time and do most of the photos before the ceremony! In my experience, this helps the wedding day schedule to flow a little better so that nobody feels rushed (often times when things start feeling rushed, people start to feel stressed and I want you to have room to breath and soak in the joy)! Doing most of your photos beforehand means that after your ceremony, you will be able to just go enjoy your guests & reception and dance the night away!! Though I would suggest to take most of your portraits at golden hour!! ;)

3. IT GIVES YOU MORE TIME WITH YOUR PEOPLE.

I mentioned it briefly above, but I can’t tell you how many brides and grooms I see hardly get to spend time with each other on their wedding day. Most ceremonies take place around 4pm or later, so if you don’t see each other until the ceremony then you really only get to spend a portion of your wedding day with one another. Along with this, I see so many stressed brides, grooms, family members, and bridal party as they try to keep the bride & groom hidden from each other until the ceremony! The first look gives you freedom to be with each other and also with all your people who came for it!! There’s nothing more special than soaking it in with your people.

4. IT DOESN’T TAKE AWAY THE MAGIC OF WALKING DOWN THE AISLE.

The biggest fear I hear as to why someone doesn’t want to do a first look is their fear of missing out on the magic of seeing each other for the first time when they walk down the aisle. I will speak from experience here — John and I did a first look, and walking down the aisle was still incredibly magical and emotional for us both. John wept throughout our ceremony and doing a first look didn’t take away anything special from that moment. Once you see your person standing there waiting for you, you forget everything and it feels like the first time of seeing each other!

If one or all of these reasonings resonated with you then I would definitely encourage you to do a first look! But also know that if you decide to wait to see each other until the ceremony, I will be cheering you on and your photographer(maybe that’s me) will make it rock!!

Let me know below if you would choose a first look, or wait until your ceremony to see each other and why! :)
